Mexican mariachi music is, quite often, a guy thing. Drinking a bottle of tequila in a dive bar, drowning sorrows over the woman who left you, often for good reason. Even when the lead singer is female, and some of the greats are, the band is mostly men.
So it’s incredibly refreshing to listen to Mariachi Flor de Toloache, an all-female mariachi band from New York City. They’re young, millennials with a mish-mash of cultural influences, but also deeply rooted in the traditional mariachi sound.
Their debut album is one of my favorites right now, definitely an early contestant for best of the year. If you want to know why, just watch their Tiny Desk concert at NPR. It’s only half the band. Can you imagine how joyous and mind-blowing the whole ensemble must be?
