In Potsdam, an all-women barbershop chorus

There's a sisterhood in Potsdam that makes music every Tuesday night at the AA Kingston Middle School. The group, Acapella North Chorus, is a chapter of women’s barbershop organization Sweet Adelines International, and often sings at nursing homes and other local venues. Its members include singers of all ages.

Barbershop-style singing is an original American art form. It's four-part harmonies have grown to be a passion for thousands of men and women around the globe. Women have been singing barbershop since the 1940's, and have made the art form their own.

Traditionally, Acapella North has performed a fall concert, but recently has focused on giving back to the community by hosting benefit concerts.  A couple of weeks ago they were guests at a concert in Edwards featuring the Canton Goldenaires men's barbershop ensemble.  The women's next gig is in December at the Potsdam Methodist Church.

Music director Donna Kleist started as a singer in the chorus in 1990. Her two daughters have also honed their singing skills performing with the chorus. Photo: Todd Moe
