feat. Diana Krall and the NAC Orchestra.
Saturday, October 22nd, 2016
Saturday night in Ottawa played host to the 20th annual National Arts Centre Gala featuring five-time GRAMMY winning jazz artist Diana Krall, along with her exceptional quartet, Anthony Wilson on guitar, Jeff Hamilton on drums and John Clayton on bass, supported on stage by the internationally acclaimed NAC Orchestra, under the leadership of its Music Director Alexander Shelley.
The back-tie evening kicked off a red-carpet reception in the NAC foyer, before adjourning to Southam Hall for the evenings program which commenced with speeches from the presenting sponsors, followed by National Arts Centre Foundation CEO Jayne Watson, and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, wife of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was this years Honorary Chair, along with an audience filled with a veritable who’s who of political society in Ottawa.
Shortly thereafter, Diana Krall joined the quartet on stage, kicking things off with one of her favourite show openers, the Peggy Lee standard ‘I Love Being Here with You’, followed by the ballad ‘Do it Again’ with the NAC Orchestra jumping in and continuing through a fast paced ten-song set filled with selections which spanned the catalogue of her storied career to date. The evening’s performance closed with the popular Gershwin classic ‘SWonderful” leaving the capacity crowd on its feet wanting for more.
The concert was followed by a post-performance reception in the foyer and a dinner on Southam Hall stage.
Proceeds from the Gala go to the National Youth and Education Trust in support of the NAC’s arts education programs across Canada. Initiatives supported by the National Youth and Education Trust include a wide range of programs such as masterclasses, internships, and training programs for emerging artists, as well as student matinees, open rehearsals, and subsidized tickets to build young audiences.
